Details
It’s 100 years since Alfred Watkins’ discovered ley lines! Visit Herefordshire will be marking this significant 100th anniversary with a county-wide celebration, starting on the 26 June 2021. The life and legacy of this extraordinary man will be celebrated through walks, talks, a photography exhibition, film, art workshops, poetry and more.
On 30 June 1921, Arthur Watkins, a Herefordian and pioneer photographer, had the revelation that a system of straight lines criss-crossed the countryside. According to his theory of leylines, these trackways connect ancient, spiritual sites from old churches and hilltops to standing stones. Watkins’ concept has had an enormous impact: in the 1920s and 1930s it drove thousands of people to the countryside in search of the straight tracks; a 1960s revival made links with the mystical and even UFOs, whilst in the 1970s it influenced the land art movement and artists such as Richard Long and Hamish Fulton.
Join us to celebrate Watkins, visit ancient leyline locations in our beautiful countryside and explore his artistic connections.
