This course will give you the opportunity to make a fine piece of furniture from locally sourced timber, and the chance to discover the creativity and joy of woodworking for yourself.

On the first day you will find out how measure timber, how to plane it, and how to saw it. You will learn about the four most important woodworking tools - a saw, a chisel, a bench plane, and a marking gauge - and understand how to use them safely. Then you will learn how to mark out and cut a woodworking joint, using the saw and mortice chisel.

On the second day of this weekend course, you will learn how to cut out shapes in wood using a jig saw, find out how to create a wedged mortice, and you will start to put together your new skills by making a sliding bookshelf or similar.

By the end of a busy second day you will be ready to finish your piece using either an oil-based product, or with sealant and bees’ wax. You will be able to take home your bookshelf – and amaze your friends with your newly learned skills!

The weekend woodworking courses run from 9.30am to 4.30pm on both days, and include a delicious home cooked lunch, eaten together, in the middle of the day.
There is a maximum of two learners per course to ensure safety and provide an element of individual tuition.
