Sat 10 - Sun 11 Nov Two Day Green Woodworking Course for Beginners

This course will give you an introduction to working green wood, and the opportunity to make a green wood table or stool.

You will spend the first morning of the course in our woodlands, finding out about the way woodlands are managed to provide green wood and timber for our workshop, but also to maximise the diversity of the flora and fauna.

You will learn about the different trees in the woodlands, be able to cut some hazel and ash coppice, and learn how to use a billhook and saw safely.

Then we will take our green wood to the workshop and you will learn how shape your wood using a froe, axe and a draw knife.

On the second day, you will learn how to make a round tenon and mortice joint on the legs of your stool or table, fashion a seat or a table top from oak, ash or cherry, and explore how to join the two so that your creation is strong and level!

Finally you will discover how to finish your creation with oils or with a sealer and bees’ wax.

These are the skills you will gain on this course:
? Learn to identify the main species of trees and plants in our native woodlands.
? Learn about the life-cycle of the oak, ash , birch, and hazel.
? Learn how to grow and harvest hazel coppice, to produce the raw material for green wood furniture.
? Learn how to use a billhook to cut and sned a coppice shoot.
? Learn how to cleave and split green wood.
? Learn how to shape green wood on a shave horse using the draw knife.
? Learn about moisture in wood, and the different techniques used to overcome problems of swelling and contraction.
? Learn how to design and construct a green wood stool or table
