At the heart of a historic Herefordshire estate lie gardens that have grown quietly over the centuries. Some of the great names of English gardening left their mark here, from George London and Humphry Repton to Joseph Paxton, whose 1846 Orangery still stands at the heart of the estate. For most of their history the gardens were private. In 2000 they opened to the public for the first time, after an extensive redesign by Simon Dorrell.
Today, visitors can wander through two 18th-century walled gardens fed by a working water system drawn from the River Lugg, with cascades, a walk-behind waterfall, reflecting canals and stepping stones for younger explorers to cross.
A 1,000-yew maze conceals a secret tunnel with a Gothic tower at its centre, and the 160-year-old wisteria arch is believed to be among the oldest in the country. The Old Bear Nature Trail weaves through the wider gardens, a castle play area gives families space to run about, and guided tours with our head gardener run through the season on Monday and Tuesdays (excluding bank holidays).
The Joseph Paxton-designed Orangery is home to our café, with artisan food made from scratch on site and views out across the gardens. Step-free access covers most of the formal gardens, dogs are welcome on leads, and free parking makes it easy to stay for the day. A rewarding visit for garden enthusiasts, daydreamers and adventurers alike.
