1. The Historic Hotel

Green Dragon, Hereford

Historical connections: At over 900 years old, this is one of Britains oldest recorded hotels and over the centuries has welcomes guests on serious notoriety including Admiral Nelson to Edward Elgar. During WW11 the cellar was converted into air raid shelters.

Notes on the architecture: The 1847 Facade boasts a striking continuous cast iron balcony, whilst inside the oldest surviving part of the hotel, The Judges room, features an ornate chamfered stone fireplace with a carved lintel that dates back to the 15th-Century

Perfect for: Staying right in the action during the Hereford Military Festival

2. The 14th Century Estate

Kentchurch Estate, Kentchurch

Historical connections: Dating back to the 14th century and following his failed rebellion, Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh Prince of Wales, is believed to have lived out his final mysterious years in the secrecy of Kentchurch under the protection of the Scudamore family (who are still in residence today). The Estate has many famous connections such as Queen Victoria, Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shaw.

Notes on the architecture: Grand Regency-style exteriors meet a dramatic medieval interiors. The 14th-century tower room stands as a reminder of the estate's ancient history.

Perfect for: Feeling you're being transported to a historic wonderland. Ideal for larger group stays (smaller accommodation is also available) 

3. The Charming Farmhouse

Cwmmau Farmhouse

Historical Connections: This spectacular early 17th-century Jacobean farmhouse, was formerly a hunting lodge and played a ey role in the heart of the Welsh Marches village of Brilley in it's time. The preserved historic kitchen bread ovens and ancient childhood doodles etched onto the upstairs plasterwork means you a stay here really does feel like you've time-travelled. 

Notes on the Architecture: The timber-framed exterior is built around a traditional cobbled courtyard. Inside expect huge medieval oak beams and ancient leaded windows.

Perfect for: Those who loved the film Hamnet, as this was the set of Hewlands in the movie! 

4. The Cosy Cottage (with an artistic history)

Orchard Cottage, Prestigne

Historic Connection: Tucked away on a sprawling 400 acre estate dating back to the Jacobean times, this former Gardener's cottage sits directly alongside Rodd Court - the final home and creative sanctuary for the world-renowned artist Sir Sidney Nolan. 

Notes on Architecture: Many original elements of period decor and woodwork have been maintained bother externally and internally.

Perfect for: Wandering the same orchards that inspired Nolan's late work (and sleep surrounded by the artist's original prints).

5. The Wildcard

Green Lane Carriage, Willersley

Historic Connection: Formerly a working Cambrian Railway Carriage from the golden age of steam travel, this cosy spot it has been lovingly restored giving guests a tangible connection to the transport history that transformed rural Herefordshire in the 19th century.

Notes on Architecture: Many original elements of period decor and woodwork have been maintained bother externally and internally.

Perfect for: Stepping back in time amid a beautiful rural backdrop.
