Walkable riverside City alive with history.

Hereford

  • Discover vibrant cultural life
  • Stay at fabulous historic hotels
  • Enjoy lively, independent shopping

Hereford sits right at the heart of the county, on a loop of the River Wye. The golden-stone cathedral, with its medieval Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, is a huge draw – but you can also wander among half-timbered houses and stroll along the Wye.

Browse independent shops across the city – they're clustered along quirky Church Street – and explore the Old Market, transformed into an open-air destination for shopping, dining and cinema. For more arty excitement, head to The Courtyard Hereford for theatre, comedy, workshops and more.

Hereford in the spring

Blossom season is stunning in Hereford and surrounding areas. Head to Breinton Springs to see the fruit trees in full bloom and discover wild bluebells in the nearby woodland. Explore the National Trust’s Weir Garden, where snowdrops and spring flowers line scenic riverbank trails.

Get a thrill at the historic Hereford May Fair, a 900-year-old tradition that transforms the city streets with fast rides and a brilliantly bustling atmosphere. Soak up the spring sunshine with brunch at Sensory & Rye or a luxurious afternoon tea at the Green Dragon or Castle House Hotel.

Hereford in the summer

Hereford Indie Food Festival marks a true highlight of the City’s summer calendar. Landing on the August bank holiday weekend, it brings a celebration of street food, local makers, and live music right to the heart of the city. Afterwards, take a stroll along the banks of the river, or if you fancy seeing the city from another angle, hire a canoe and go for a meander downstream.

While away a sun-drenched afternoon browsing the quirky boutiques and galleries of the Independent Quarter, centred around the cobbled lanes of Church Street and East Street. Finish the day with dinner al fresco at The Yard, or Old Market (we highly recommend grabbing an award-winning bite from the legendary Beefy Boys!).

Hereford in the autumn

Autumn is apple harvest season, so what better time to visit the Hereford Museum of Cider. Set in the original Bulmers factory, explore fascinating champagne cider cellars and discover the history of Herefordshire's most famous export. September ushers Hereford Military History Festival, with events, talks and debates happening at venues across the city.

More culture foxes can be found at the Black & White House Museum to experience everyday Jacobean life, or catch a brilliant evening of theatre and comedy at The Courtyard. Afterwards, cosying up for dinner and a glass for something warming at The Bookshop restaurant.

Hereford in the winter

Winter is a magical time to visit, as the historic city takes on a festive glow, starting with the annual Christmas light switch-on. Skip the usual chains and saunter through the Independent Quarter to find truly unique gifts, or browse the 40-plus artisan stalls at the spectacular Hereford Cathedral Christmas Fair, held right in the cathedral nave.

As the evenings draw in, experience the true spirit of the season at atmospheric concerts, like the spellbinding Christmas Music by Candlelight or the Hereford Choral Society's legendary rendition of Handel’s Messiah at the Cathedral. For a dose of family fun, catch the award-winning annual Christmas Pantomime at The Courtyard theatre, before settling down for a candlelit dinner at Carriages Restaurant.
