Barton Court is all about love, greed and money. The Georgian elegance that we see today came about simply because a man named Henry Lambert wanted to win a wife.  He took a medieval building, gave it a radical makeover, and introduced sophistication and glamour into an unfashionable farmhouse to impress his quarry. The strategy worked. She – a local heiress - married him.  And her, not inconsiderable, fortune became his.

Barton Court has been called ‘Herefordshire’s hidden gem’ with good reason.  This elegant Georgian country house has been in private ownership for over 130 years and only recently accessible to the general public. It sits on the edge of the village of Colwall, behind high walls, with spectacular views from all its extensive grounds towards the Malverns and, on a clear day, the Cotswolds.

Steeped in the history of 10 centuries, the property has been stylishly and sensitively restored to incorporate modern conveniences while losing none of the period charm. You can experience this slice of history by staying in the main house on a bed and breakfast basis or in one of the converted outbuildings. These are available as self catering units.

Can’t stay over? Just drop in for a really good coffee in our new café. The Loose Box, a funky space converted from one of the stable blocks, curates the best of local and artisanal produce, and will be open when regulations allow.

Caring For The Planet

We believe in conserving and nurturing whenever and wherever we can and we try to be mindful of all wastage. We have introduced sustainable measures to the buildings to help our carbon footprint: our heating is via biomass and supplemented by energy from our discrete solar array. We have replanted the lost orchard and are restoring the walled garden to supply some of the food and flowers used here for our visitors.

Barton Court Recommends

One of my favourite places to visit is The Painted Room in Ledbury. Found when the building was being renovated, it is an exquisite example of Elizabethan wall painting and of social climbing in its early form: keeping up with the much posher Joneses!
