Artistraw Cidery and Orchard

Artistraw Cidery and Orchard

Here at Artistraw, we are passionate about making natural cider (no added sugar, water or sulphites- just apples). We handpick our fruit from unsprayed, low intensity traditional standard orchards in the local area. This guarantees juice suitable for the attenuated fermentation technique we practice (not to mention being very beneficial to biodiversity and entirely aligned with our own permaculture principles).

Located in the Welsh Marches, just 2 miles outside the beautiful town of books Hay-on-Wye, we enjoy access to some of the most beautiful orchards and views in the country.

We are currently planting a 2.5 acre orchard just next to our cidery, which is gradually filling up with rare, local and endangered apple and perry pear varieties. Each tree has been grafted by ourselves, making what will eventually be a very special orchard. It also boasts the most amazing view of the Black mountains!

We run tours and tasting by appointment. During the tour you will learn all about the work we are doing in creating the orchard and how we make our cider, plus we will talk you through three of our ciders whilst you taste them!

In the summer we occasionally open our cider garden in the evening with a pop-up food producer to offer a pleasant outside space to spend time in the company of good food, cider and friends.

Entry Cost

Our tour and tasting is priced at £10 per adult and takes about 1-1.5 hours. Minimum of four people per tour. Get in touch to discuss discounts for groups of over 10 people.

Caring For The Planet

Even more than cider is the love we have for our orchards. The traditional orchard we have planted will never be sprayed with agri-chemicals or pesticides and instead be a haven for plants, wildlife and apples. Whilst our orchard is growing we also pick from other local unsprayed, traditional orchards. We keep things as local as possible; none of our orchards are further than 10 miles away. In 2020 we started recording every single last bit of our energy consuption so that we can now publish the CO2 emmissions associated with each bottle of cider we make.
