Hay on Wye
Hay Castle was originally built in the 12th century as a Norman fort, it was later transformed into a mansion in the 17th century. Over time, it endured damage from conflict and fire, eventually falling into disrepair. Recently restored and reopened to the public in 2022, today the castle serves as a cultural centre, offering exhibitions, tours, and events that highlight its long history and connection to the town’s literary heritage.
Visitors can enjoy daily guided tours of the medieval keep and Jacobean mansion, browse exhibitions and relax in our café for a delicious lunch or maybe a coffee and a cake. There's also a gift shop, rooftop views, and interactive features like costume try-ons and a cellar film about the castle’s history, which is loved by many.
