Don’t even begin to worry that ‘off-grid’ in the case of lovely Van Cottage means any kind of deprivation. It is quite the opposite: with their masterly restoration of an old cottage in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, the owners have made sure that all the comforts are in place, including very fast broadband. It is a bit of an adventure, however, to enter into the spirit of a uniquely solar- and wood-powered eco-friendly holiday. You will need to love lighting fires; be considerate in your electricity usage; and to be sensitive to the natural world around you. You will be rewarded by the call of birds in the trees of The Big Wood, and the satisfaction of having a stove, a hot tub, and a wood burner heated by your own efforts. Sleeps up to 4 people in a bedroom with a king-size bed, and a twin bedroom, plus a non-toddling baby, and 2 well-behaved dogs.

Changeovers are normally Mondays and Fridays. Weekends are set-priced from Friday 4pm to Monday 10.30am; so you can stay 1, 2 or 3 nights for the weekend price.

Van Cottage Recommends

Visit the stunningly beautiful little Kilpeck church (15 min drive), a Romanesque gem with brilliant stone carvings, corbels and gargoyles. There is also an interesting castle in the village, but this is often overshadowed by its famous neighbour. Afterwards enjoy a drink and a meal at the Kilpeck Inn.
