VH Map

Discover the northern reaches of Herefordshire, encountering...

  • A striking WWI sculpture
  • A moving tribute to the Polish military
  • A historic airfield used for WW11 glider pilot training
  • The pivotal Wars of the Roses battlefield at Mortimer's Cross

From tranquil final resting places, such as the graves of Polish allies (including a general) at Leominster Cemetery, to striking artistic tributes like the Verdun sculpture (by Ed Elliot) commemorating WW1 in Pembridge, Herefordshire is peppered with memorials to wartime sacrifice.

Head to Shobdon Airfield to learn more about this former RAF station and its pivotal role as a training base for glider pilots in WWII. The site is now home to Herefordshire Aero Club which will take you up in a Cessna or Piper trial flight. There's accommodation and a restaurant too for extended stays.

Venture to the heart of Mortimer Country, an area steeped in history where England meets Wales. Visit Wigmore Castle, founded around 1070 and a stronghold of the Mortimer family before becoming derelict in 1425 (although many of its fortifications survive to full height). Explore the rich medieval and English Civil War heritage of the area including the site of the Battle of Mortimer's Cross (1461), a pivotal event in the Wars of the Roses where Edward IV secured his first victory, leading to his triumph at Towton. Just make sure you leave time to grab a bite at the many outstanding restaurants, tearooms, and inns along the way.
