The Jess Collective

In celebration of National Jessica Day on Wednesday 25 February, we announced a world first! Group exhibitions usually embrace an overarching theme, and we believe this is the first show where that unifying theme is the first name of the artists involved. Names are a fundamental part of our identity, acting as both symbol and anchor in shaping personality and self-concept. We are often drawn to those who share our characteristics, including our names—a phenomenon known as similarity-attraction. This can prompt positive self-associations alongside a sense of collective identity. The Jess Collective invites viewers to reflect on how names, and the cultural meanings attached to them, might also influence creative identity. The name Jessica has Hebrew origins meaning “vision” or “sight” and has evolved to include interpretations such as “to behold” or “to see before.” In some traditions, it also carries the meaning “gift from God.” Echoing these ideas of perception and presence, each Jessica in this exhibition offers a distinct way of seeing—interpreting local landscapes, flora, fauna, and people through her own artistic lens. Together, they transform the gallery into a collective ‘gift’, where identity becomes art. As the artists collaborated, debated, and filled the space with energy and laughter, one final idea emerged as an underlying theme: perhaps their collective noun is “joyful”—a joyful of Jess’!
