History enthusiasts unite! This May, the Herefordshire Histories Festival will host events right across the County. 

From captivating talks, tours and exhibitions to exclusive access at landmarks rarely open to the public, don’t miss your chance to explore Herefordshire's fascinating, varied (often untold) past, like never before.

With so many unique events spanning diverse historical eras, we've handpicked our top ten to spark your curiosity and simplify planning. There truly is something for everyone, so be sure to check out the full schedule.

 

1. Hereford History Day

Saturday 16th May 10am - 4pm | St Peter's Church

Passionate local history societies are gathering under one roof to share their incredible knowledge about the City of Hereford's unique heritage. A garrison town for centuries, learn about its early Mercian origins, Norman castles, golden-stone Cathedral, Mappa-Mundi connections and so much more besides. This event is running all day, so if you're keen to now more about this swing by after brunch or before you head to do your shopping.

2. Tour a Knights Templar Church

Sunday 10th - Friday 22nd May | St Michael's Church Garway (tours on request)

Founded in 1180 after a royal gift from Henry II, the round foundations of this ancient church still whisper tales of the powerful Knights Templar order. There are a host of medieval treasures to be unearthed during a tour, from ancient coffin lids still in situ, to intriguing carvings inside and out, and even a money chest hewn from a single tree secured with three locks! Expect to leave with a host of new facts about this fascinating, enigmatic order.

3. A Ghost Tour of Hereford

9th, 16th and 23rd May 7pm | Starting at The Hereford Bull Statue, Hereford

This thrilling walk promises a mix of chills, chuckles, and spine-tingling local tales. Expect to be entertained and intrigued as your guide brings the city's haunted history to life, sharing tales of the old lady roaming the Cathedral crypt, a legendary Welsh vampire, grim local executions, and even a few scandalous secrets. It’s an unforgettable way to experience Hereford after dark.

4. Weapons and Arrows

Saturday 9th May at 4pm | Cusop Castle (Parking at St Mary's Church, Cusop)

The atmospheric grounds of the former Cusop Castle make the ideal backdrop for a truly hands-on encounter with medieval history. Hosted by the Cusop History Group, join former re-enactor Lesley Arrowsmith to discover the weaponry of ancient warriors. Handle swords, try on heavy chainmail and helmets, and examine the devastating arrowheads used in battle. This all-weather event guarantees an immersive glimpse into the past for those of all ages.

5. The Bunker - a World War Two Display

Friday 15th - 18th May 11am-3pm | The Bunker, Munitions Close, Hereford

Tucked away on the aptly named Munitions Close in Hereford, The Bunker is home to the incredible Taylor Historics collection. This privately owned World War Two exhibition brings the 1940s vividly to life. Inside you’ll find a Military Police Checkpoint, Field Dressing Station, SAS Desert display, and a nostalgic Home Front corner. Packed with fascinating and rare military ephemera, this free event is a must-see for all the family.

Cradley Church

6. Cradley Through the Ages

Saturday 23rd and Monday 25th May 2pm | Cradley Church

Uncover the rich heritage of Cradley with a guided tour of the Anglo-Saxon church, and discover its links to musical legends like Sir Edward Elgar and Sir Arthur Bliss. Afterwards, stroll over to the stunning, timber-framed Grade II* listed Village Hall. Dating back to 1530, it's the oldest in Herefordshire! Here, browse the 'Cradley Through the Ages' exhibition, a treasure trove of heritage archives, photographs, and maps perfect for local history buffs. Refreshments will also be on offer.

7. Herefordshire History Pub Quiz

Wednesday 20th May 7pm for 7:30pm start | The Barrels

The Hereford Civic Society is taking over the pub quiz at the city institution, The Barrels, on successive Wednesdays during the festival. Gather a team of up to five pals, grab a pint and put your local historical knowledge to the test!

Risbury Hillfort

8. The Orchard in the Hillfort

Sunday 10th May 2:30pm | Humber Woodland of Remembrance

Join this guided 3.5-mile circular walk to Risbury Hillfort, and the beautiful hidden orchard beyond. There’ll be a short historic talk, followed by a bring-and-share picnic. Meet at 2.30pm at the Humber Woodland of Remembrance, tickets are just £5 (children go free). Please note, dogs are not permitted.

9. Census Stories

Monday 18th May 11-12am | Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre (HARC)

Join Clare O’Grady for an informative look at the evolution of the UK census. From the first full count in 1841 to the detailed records of the 1920s, Clare will explain how everyday lives have been documented over the decades. You will also receive clear, practical guidance on how to use online archives to uncover your own family and local history. As this is very much an interactive, hands-on session, places are strictly limited.

Clodock Mill

10. A Mill in Motion

Set on the banks of the blissfully serene river Monnow, there is evidence of a mill having been on the site at Clodock in AD1241 - that’s almost 800 years of corn grinding history waiting for you to discover! At this living history event, expect to see first hand the power of water turning the millstones and wonder at how this ancient machinery still works like clockwork today, thanks to dedicated restoration work which began in 2001.
