On Friday 10 March at 7.30pm the celebrated tenor James Gilchrist joins the esteemed early music ensemble The Linarol Consort of Viols to perform a fascinating programme of early 16th century German song. Love in all its various forms is explored in songs by leading musical figures working in Maximilian’s court: Heinrich Isaac, Paul Hofhaimer and Ludwig Senfl, one of the most prolific composers of German song and secular music of the period. The text is carried in the tenor line, which is surrounded by lower and higher instrumental parts, all voices being of equal importance. Although most famous for his solo work, James Gilchrist is a consummate and experienced ensemble artist and brings the early German texts to life through a profound understanding of the language derived from his own German heritage.
