Snodhill Castle's first-ever Community Dig
From 23rd August 2025 until 30th August 2025
About This Event
Snodhill Castle is the newly uncovered ‘hidden gem’ of a Marcher castle in Herefordshire’s Golden Valley, cared for by the Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust. Now we're inviting everyone to help solve one of its key puzzles - and have a rewarding last week of the summer holidays! From August 23–30, a free Community Archaeological Dig will be exploring a mysterious earthwork rising from a moated enclosure beyond the castle walls. The dig is part of the Trust’s ‘Fortifying the Future’ project: a three-year initiative financed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to secure Snodhill’s future and anchor its place in our national story. Student archaeologists are already excavating the castle’s main gatehouse and Eastern enclosure; now it’s your turn to join in! The dig runs from August 23–30, with flexible shifts you can join for as much or as little as you like. It’s free and open to volunteers aged 12+, of all abilities - though under-15s must be accompanied by an adult. Places are limited, so to find out more and reserve a place, email the team now! “It won’t be a picnic—but where else can a spell in glorious countryside contribute to 950 years of history?” says Tim Hoverd, Lead Archaeologist.
