Magna Carta: The greatest charter?
About This Event
The Magna Carta is one of the most famous documents in English history and it still resonates today with many people for its role in the defence of rights and freedoms.
In this lecture, Dr Claire Breay will explore how the Magna Carta came to be granted and what it really says. She will explain why it was annulled, then revised and reissued three times by 1225, and how it evolved over the centuries into an international symbol of liberty, human rights and democracy.
Dr Claire Breay is Head of Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts at the British Library. She has acquired many medieval manuscripts, including the St Cuthbert Gospel, for the national collection and has overseen the digitisation of over 6000 manuscripts.
Hereford Cathedral’s own 1217 Magna Carta and the 1215 King’s Writ will be on display during the event for guests to view.
This event will take place in the South Transept of the cathedral and refreshments are included in the ticket price.
