Art Workshop Painting on Paper: The Materials of Sidney Nolan
From 16th May until 17th May
About This Event
Suitable for beginners and more experienced painters alike, this art workshop offers practical skill-building and a deeper understanding of Sidney Nolan’s material experimentation. Led by contemporary painter Daniel MacCarthy, immerse yourself in the different materials, intuitive mark-making and fast, fearless working methods of Nolan. Working primarily on gloss (kaolin-primed) paper, one of Nolan’s preferred surfaces, you will explore the expressive possibilities of oils, inks and watercolours, alongside less conventional materials. Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, participants will be introduced to key aspects of Nolan’s approach, including preparing grounds, using different mediums and the freedom to experiment. Studio sessions will include dragging paint across the surface, wet-on-wet application and mono-printing, giving participants the confidence to embrace a more spontaneous relationship with a variety of materials. Set within the inspiring environment of The Rodd, this is a rare opportunity to learn the processes connected to Nolan while at the same time developing your own contemporary practice. The workshop offers a supportive environment with demonstrations and individual guidance throughout. Daniel MacCarthy is a former Resident Artist at The Rodd, and his current exhibition 'Another Step Towards Troy' can be viewed in the main art gallery on-site. The experience includes lunches of locally sourced soups and bread, with coffee, tea, and biscuits provided. A materials list will be shared in advance, with additional supplies available to purchase.
