The Goal - The Courtyard

Hereford
-

The Courtyard are delighted to announce a special restaging of The Goal, a piece of new writing by Nick Lane that premiered in 2018 and celebrates 50 years since Ronnie Radford’s Giant Killing at Hereford Football Club.

February 5, 1972. The day Ronnie Radford lashed a glorious 35-yard shot past a despairing keeper and into the corner of the net at the Meadow End, helping Hereford United to a historic FA Cup 3rd round victory over Newcastle United – one of the FA Cups greatest ever Giant Killings. Now, 50 years on, The Courtyard are thrilled to be restaging The Goal to celebrate this significant piece of Hereford history.

The Goal is an inspiring and funny coming of age story, steeped in 70’s history and local folklore, set against the backdrop of Hereford United’s famous FA Cup run in 1972 and one of the FA Cups greatest ever Giant Killings.

Chris, Bob, Dan, Yorkie, Twig and Brian are six kids with passion, belief, and ill-fitting tracksuits – the ball boys. This is their story – of that season on the touchlines at Edgar Street watching their heroes, getting to know each other, swapping stories, and giving a unique insight into growing up in Hereford in the 70’s.
