Plein Air Workshop: Painting through the lense of Sidney Nolan
From 9th May until 10th May
About This Event
Join contemporary painter Daniel MacCarthy for this two day painting workshop set in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. Inspired by the work of renowned Australian artist Sidney Nolan, the course invites participants to begin with outdoor observation and develop their work further in the studio, exploring new ways of seeing and interpreting place. Offering a chance to deepen your relationship with the landscape of Nolan's former home - The Rodd. Through guided exercises, you’ll explore Nolan’s own approach to landscape, memory, simplification, and narrative, moving from direct observation towards more abstract and meaningful outcomes. Participants will paint directly from the landscape while learning techniques in composition, colour, and capturing light, with opportunities to translate these observations into expressive, personal work. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced painters, the workshop offers a supportive environment with demonstrations and individual guidance throughout. Daniel MacCarthy is a former Resident Artist at The Rodd, and his current exhibition 'Another Step Towards Troy' can be viewed in the main art gallery on-site. The experience includes lunches of locally sourced soups and bread, with coffee, tea, and biscuits provided. A materials list will be shared in advance, with additional supplies available to purchase.
