Schubertiad in Leominster - Lion Ballroom
About This Event
At 4pm on Saturday 18 June the internationally celebrated Coull Quartet with acclaimed cellist William Schofield will play: Quartettsatz in C minor D703 Schubert String Quintet (première) Derek Smith String Quintet in C D956 Schubert
Schubert adored making music in intimate settings – people’s homes, coffee houses, small assembly rooms – where he would gather a small audience to showcase his new compositions and sometimes those of other composers and enjoy being immersed in ‘the arts’. Invariably, wine and Viennese sweetmeats would be served. Such gatherings were called ‘Schubertiads’. The Lion Ballroom is one such intimate venue that, no doubt, Schubert would have loved. This concert will feature two of his finest works – his Quartettsatz and his great String Quintet - alongside a new work by a contemporary composer with complimentary wine/grape juice and Viennese sweetmeats in the interval.
