Vikings at the Priory: A Cathedral Treasure – the Anglo-Saxon Hereford Gospels
- 9th June
About This Event
Bishop David Thomson will give an illustrated talk on the oldest surviving book in Hereford Cathedral’s library and present the findings of some new research that has uncovered some new content.
The Book of the Gospels was commissioned around the year 800, in the style of the Lindisfarne and Chad Gospels, to place on the high altar and for use in services and as a place to enter legal records. It is considered a great treasure of the Diocese and is on display at the Cathedral until 12th September as part of its 1350th anniversary celebrations.
Also on display in the exhibition inside the Priory is a new, hand-made book The Hereford Gospels for Today, which is starting its public tour in the diocese at Leominster. This book is filled with modern calligraphy and artistic responses to the Gospels in word and art created by children and adults.
This event is part of the Vikings at the Priory programme which runs from 27 May to 22 June. Visit: www.prioryarts.org.uk
