Vikings at the Priory: How to build a Viking Ship
- 26th May
About This Event
Viking ship design and construction revolutionized global connectivity by introducing advanced, durable, and flexible shallow-draft vessels (longships and knarrs) that allowed for rapid, long-distance ocean voyages and deep inland river navigation. This innovation enabled the Vikings to explore the world, establish vast trade networks, and project military power across Europe and North America. Longships, often called ‘dragonships’ because of the carved dragon or serpent heads on the prows, intended to intimidate enemies and ward off evil spirits, were a way to travel to another world, a bridge between the old world and the new.
Stephen Etheridge, of Regia Anglorum, explains the technology and craftsmanship which led to the Vikings reach new continents.
This event is part of the Vikings at the Priory programme which runs from 27 May to 22 June. Visit: www.prioryarts.org.uk
