National Trust Cwmmau Farmhouse
Whitney-on-wye
This striking house was built in the early 1600s, once at the heart of a significant farm – one of three in Brilley. Many of the original features and personal touches are still in place, giving a glimpse into the elaborate lifestyle enjoyed by the farming families who lived here hundreds of years ago.
The farmhouse appears in new film Hamnet (in UK cinemas from 9 January). Based on Maggie O'Farrell's Sunday Times bestselling novel and directed by Academy Award winning Chloé Zhao, Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's masterpiece, Hamlet. In the film, Cwmmau Farmhouse is Hewlands, the childhood home of Agnes, Shakespeare's wife.
The old kitchen has been preserved with its bread ovens, stoves and lots of interesting things for you to look at, while there’s a new modern kitchen with everything you need for your holiday just along the hall. It’s an impressive house with huge oak beams, stone, oak and elm floors and leaded windows, as well as spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of room to gather, inside and out.
The house has footpaths and a bridleway going by, and is surrounded by fields, wildflower meadows and woodland.
