'Snowdrops & Stones': A Winter Walk from Brobury House

'Snowdrops & Stones': A Winter Walk from Brobury House

  • 1st February
Brobury House, Bredwardine Hill, Brobury, Hereford HR3 6BS

About This Event

Join me for a 6-mile circular guided walk beginning & ending at the beautiful Brobury House, nestled beside the River Wye in Herefordshire. This route may be short but offers plenty of adventure with woodland paths, lanes, stiles, & a few steep climbs to keep us warm. We start by crossing the graceful red-brick bridge over the Wye before visiting the ancient St Andrew’s Church in Bredwardine. This church dates back to the Norman Conquest, with its chancel scarred by Owain Glyndwr’s soldiers in 1406. Inside, discover the massive font, the tomb of Walter Baskerville—a knight of giant stature—& the effigy of Sir Roger Vaughan, who fell at Agincourt in 1415. Our path then follows the wooded riverside to the site of an ancient settlement and medieval fish pond, before climbing steadily across farmland to reach Arthur’s Stone, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic chambered tomb steeped in legend. From here, the views across Herefordshire & the Wye Valley are breathtaking. We descend on footpaths and lanes to return to Brobury House, where a warming lunch of soup and toasties awaits in the café. Afterwards, walkers are free to explore Brobury’s winter gardens, which in early February are famous for their dazzling carpets of snowdrops. (Please note there may be an additional entrance fee for the gardens.)
