Calling Aspiring Wildlife Detectives

Running from 14 – 22 February, 10am to 4pm, the Wildlife Detectives Trail at Croft Castle near Leominster invites you to track down the clues left behind by local wildlife! Dash between trees, jump over roots and peek under branches as you follow this playful garden trail. £3 per trail, includes a prize. Normal admission applies (National Trust members visit free of charge). No booking needed. After exploring, warm up with tasty snacks and drinks from the Carpenter’s tea-room.

Where to stay: The Servants' Quarters is a newly restored self-catering apartment located in Leominster Town Centre less than a 15-minute drive from Croft Castle. Originally the servants’ quarters of an impressive historic house, the apartment has been expertly restored to its former Edwardian glory, complete with servants’ bells and a fully equipped retro kitchen. A two-night stay during February half term (based on four sharing) costs from £232.

Try Your Hand At Wand Making

Oldfield Forge in rural Herefordshire isn’t just for adults wanting to learn a new skill. Their Child Friendly Activities are designed for kids who are fascinated by history, love creating things, or just want to try something new. Let them step into the exciting world of blacksmithing in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere. They can even share the experience with siblings, mum, or dad through dagger- or sword-making workshops. For the ultimate magical adventure, why not create your very own Harry Potter wand.

Where to stay: The Red Lion at Madley, less than a 30-minute drive from Oldfield Forge, has eight lovely bedrooms with several options for families if they require adjoining rooms. A delicious breakfast is included and rooms starting from £100 per night. Well-behaved dogs are welcome for £10 a night. The pub serves delicious food using local produce and there’s a brilliant kid’s menu.

Driving you Crazy? Book A 3 Day Junior Karting School

Herefordshire Raceway is located just outside the village of Weobley and is ideal for the next Lewis Hamilton or the complete beginner. Children aged 8 to 16 can learn how to improve their lap time, how to overtake and defend position over three mornings (18 to 20 February). 

Arrive at 9:30am, each session lasts for 2 hours, where children are taught the basics of karting, followed by continuous assessment to improve their skills. The final day will be a race event with the winners taking home a trophy.  The courses will be limited to 14 children, so each child can have full attention, and are priced from £120 per person.

Where to stay: The Cottage | Mellington House, in the heart of Weobley village, offers a choice of B&B or self-catering apartments and a 15th Century holiday cottage. There is more than an acre of gardens for guests to enjoy, and footpaths leading into the surrounding countryside are right on the doorstep. The cottage, sleeping four across two bedrooms, has availability during the February half term and costs from £95 per night.

Back to Nature – Book A Safari Style Sleepover

Drovers Rest is a 16th Century organic farm near the book town of Hay-on-Wye in Herefordshire. Tucked away in the foothills of the Black Mountains, the farm is surrounded by 200 acres of fields and makes for a fabulous digital detox escape. Dogs are very welcome, so guests and accommodation includes cabins, safari tents or stone cottages dotted around the farm. A two-night stay for four guests, commencing 16 February, in a Safari Tent costs from £600. The two-bedroom Drovers Cottage sleeping two adults and two kids costs from £500 for a two-night stay. Kids will love exploring the farm, plus this place is dog friendly too.

Dive Into Action & Adventure

Located in an idyllic woodland setting, Oaker Wood is a fabulous outdoor activity and glamping centre on the Herefordshire, Shropshire border. To celebrate its 25th anniversary Oaker Wood is offering holiday club adventure days from £20 per person. Get the kids off the devices with the option to try den building, Zip Wires, pizza making, High Ropes, Low Ropes and more. 

The School Holidays Activity Day 7-11s option costs from £20 for a full day running from 9am - 3pm. There is also a Teen Day option on 18th February costing £25, including High Ropes 9.30-midday and paint-balling 12.30 - 3pm. Where to stay: Less than a ten-minute drive from Oaker Wood and on the edge of the Mortimer Forest are the fantastic Aymestrey Lodges - five cosy, luxurious log cabins perfect for families. The lodges provide a relaxing retreat surrounded by nature, and the hot tubs add to the fun. A two-night stay in one of the two-bedroom lodges (based on four sharing) costs from £347 during half-term week. A three-night stay on the same basis costs from £449.

Screen-Free Family Fun In The Boutique City Of Hereford

The cathedral city of Hereford makes for a great family escape. In the Cathedral itself you can view the incredible Mappa Mundi, the largest surviving medieval map of the world – made about 800 years ago. You can also see the biggest chained library on the planet, dating from a time when books were so precious that they had to be locked up!

Hereford is also home to some incredible eateries, including The Beefy Boys (serving up award-winning burgers and celebrating its 10th anniversary this year), lots of lovely independent shops and cafes, as well as some brilliant visitor attractions, including Green Spider climbing, Flip Out and the city’s Sculpture Trail. The kids will be too busy having fun to ask for their devices.

Where to stay: The Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford has availability over the February half-term. The Apartment, which is perfect for families as it sleeps four, costs from £126 per night. Hunt For The Gruffalo

Queenswood Country Park & Arboretum, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's most visited nature reserve, is home to the Gruffalo Trail which features six larger-than-life sculptures of characters from the books created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Look out for Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl, the Gruffalo and the Gruffalo's Child as you wander through this stunning reserve. Walk the trail for free or purchase a quiz activity sheet from the Queenswood gift shop for an extra layer of fun (£4 per sheet). Price includes quiz sheet and trail map, pencil, and a small prize and sticker on completion. The trail route is about a mile long, and dogs are welcome.

Where to stay: Use one of the self-catering cottages at the glorious White Heron Estate as a base to explore the northern part of Herefordshire, including Queenswood Country Park, which is just a 30 minute drive away. The beautifully restored Victorian Lodge set within the grounds of the 700 acre estate is available during February half term. There is a Padel court available on the farm as is e-bike hire and routes to follow for the over 13s.

Meet Mini Animals

Animal lovers and owl fans will have a wonderful time at the Small Breeds Farm Park near Kington, voted Visitor Attraction of the Year at Visit Herefordshire’s Tourism Awards 2025. Instead of scrolling through animal videos on YouTube, meet the pygmy goats, miniature horses, alpacas and many more friendly residents in real life. The farm is also home to over 30 breeds of owl! £13.50 per adult and £9 per child (under 2s go free). Open Thursday-Monday 10.30am-4pm.
