Military History Trails: Plan a Historic Getaway

Festival, fringes & beyond
The UK's first dedicated Military History Festival storms Hereford this September (26-28) bringing together 40 acclaimed authors, historians and military experts for three days of lively, engaging talks and discussions. But the history doesn’t stop there!
Our five self-guided tours delve into the Herefordshire military past, from World War heroes to medieval Marcher Lord. Taking in the city centre, it's fringes and to the quiet picturesque countryside beyond it's former walls. Or for those who like more structure, check out the limited time bookable guided tours at the bottom of the page.
The perfect excuse to extend your Festival visit, arrive a day early and leave a day late…
Hereford | noun
From the Old English, hére 'army' and ford 'river crossing'
Hereford has been a garrison town for 2,000 years. From the Romans, the Mercians and the Normans through the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War, it has played an extraordinary role in Britain’s military history, making it the ultimate location of the inaugural Military History Festival.
Based at venues across Hereford City Centre, top speakers include the likes of Antony Beevor, Kate Adie and Ben Macintyre. With events happening from morning right into the evening, for the duration of the festival, you might not have a huge amount of downtime but if you do fancy a detour between talks here's what we recommend...
